After being in moieties for about 300 years, the manor of Caton (Gresgarth or Grassyard being the manor house of one moiety since at least the mid-1400s) came into the hands of George Compton in 1666. It was sold several times before being acquired by Thomas Edmondson in 1806 and from him it has descended through marriage to the present owners.
