KNIGHT OF BARRELLS

Papers relating to the Barrells (Wootton Wawen) estate of the Knight family, with particular reference to its sale in the nineteenth cnetury, but including a letter of Lady Luxborough, 1752, and some 20th-century material.

The Knight family were settled at Barrells from the seventeenth century. Robert Knight who died in 1744 was Cashier to the South Sea Company. His son, Robert served variously as M.P. for Great Grimsby, Castle Rising and Milborne Port. In 1745 he was created Baron Luxborough of Shannon, in 1763 Viscount Barrells and Earl of Catherlough. He separated from first wife, Henrietta, Lady Luxborough, the patron of Shenstone and other poets. Dying without surviving legitimate issue, the estates were inherited by his elder illegitimate son, Robert Knight.
