Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume G H K L is the third in the series of six alpha reference volumes, which covers various preferments transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation.; The volume contains the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed Land Agents Messrs. Cluttons and Messrs. Pickering & Smith. The preferments in this volume include the Durham Canonry Estates vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners between 1841-1862. The Durham Deanery Estates vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 7 July 1840 and the Durham Separate Estates. The Exeter Chancellorship Estates vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 17 February 1847. The Exeter Deanery Estates vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 12 May 1848 and on 17 January 1861. The Exeter Precentorship Estates vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 1 August 1839. The Exeter Sub-Deanery Estates vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 1 August 1838 and the Exeter Treasurership Estates vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 9 May 1848. The volume also includes St. David's Chancellorship Estates, St. David's Deanery Estates, St. David's Sub-Deanery Estates, St. David's Treasurership Estates, St. David's Prebend Estates, Carfai Prebend Estates and the Ely Separate Prebendal Estates.; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as it was the most comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent and condition of the preferments that had been transferred. Also as the estates had been in the hands of the Ecclesiastical Corporations for so long, these surveys were often the only means that the Ecclesiastical Commissioners had of establishing church title, as the Orders in Council only gave a general overview of what was being vested or commuted.; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Durham, parishes of Lanchester, Billingham, Dalton le Dale, Bedlington, Merrington, Castle Eden, Heighington, Witton Gilbert, Aycliffe, Wolsingham, Shincliffe, Muggleswick, Houghton le Spring, Pittington, Jarrow, Monk Heselden, Auckland St. Andrew, Durham St. Giles and Durham St. Oswald; the county of Devonshire, parishes of Stoke Gabriel, Bishops Tawton, Braunton Dean, Collaton Rawleigh, Paignton, Marldon, Exeter St. Sidwells, Bishops Nympton, Swimbridge, Landkey and Clist Honiton; the county of Cornwall, parishes of St. Newlyn, Egoshayle, Merther, Cornelly and [St.] Probus; the county of Northumberland, parish of Wallsend; the county of Cambridgeshire, parishes of Elm and Witchford; the county of Norfolk, parish of Emneth; the county of Cardiganshire, parishes of Lampeter pont Stephen, Pembryn, Llandewi-Aberarth and Llandesseleo Gogo [Llandissilio Gogo or Llandisilio Gogo]; the county of Pembrokeshire, parishes of St. David, Llawhadden, Blitherstone, Dogwell, Spittal, Llanstinan, Mathry, Clydey and St. Nicholas; the counties of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, parish of Llangan.
