A miscellany of texts written in England in the early 14th century. ff. 1r-27r. 'De fide orthodoxa', by St. John Damascene (c.675-749), or Johannes Damacenus, also known as St. John of Damascus, in the translation of Burgundio of Pisa (d. 1193), corrected and amplified by Robert Grosseteste (c.1170-1253), Bishop of Lincoln. f. 1r. Table of the 101 chapters. f. 1v. Begins: 'Deum nemo uidit ...' f. 27r. Ends: '... letitiam fructificantes. Explicit liber logices. Heresim et Sentenciarum Iohannis Damasceni'. Many side notes, most of them beginning 'Alius liber' or 'Aliud exemplar' or referring to the Greek original. Similar notes in other copies are referred to by S. H. Thomson, 'The Writings of Robert Grosseteste' (Cambridge, 1940), pp. 48-49, and in 'Robert Grosseteste' (ed. D. A. Callus), 1955, pp. 46-54. ff. 27v-28v blank. ff. 29r-136r. Nearly contemporary hands attribute d, e, g, j, m, n, o, w to St. Augustine, r to Gennadius of Massilia, also known as Gennadius Scholasticus (died c.496), and s to St. Ambrose (339-397), and call m, n, w respectively De simbolo, De laude caritatis, and De origine mundi. c, f, h, i, k, l, p, q, v, x are anonymous and of these only c, v, x have titles. a and b are marked in the margins with the Grossetestian signs discussed by S.H.Thomson, pp. 122-4, and by R. Owned by John Gunthorpe (d. 1498), Dean of Wells: 'Liber M' Iohannis Gunthorp' Decani Wellensis. anno x(i) 1484(to)', f. 1r, at foot. Gilt centrepiece from an earlier binding (see Physical description) is a crest: On a chapeau turned up ermine an ostrich holding in its beak a horseshoe. This is the crest of Sir Edward Coke (1549-1633); the volume doubtless came to Sion College with the library of his son Sir Robert Coke (1587-1653), which was given by George Berkeley, 1st Earl of Berkeley (d.1698) in 1682, although part was not received until 1699. Recorded at Sion College in 1697 in Edward Bernard, 'Catalogi Manuscriptorum Angliae et Hiberniae' (Oxford, 1697), vol 2, no. 4077. Shelfmark A11 at f. 1r. Recorded with this shelfmark in William Reading, 'Bibliothecae cleri Londinensis in Collegio Sionensi catalogus' (London, 1724). Transferred from Sion College to Lambeth Palace Library, 1996.
Physical condition
Quarter leather binding, 355 x 253 mm., 1963. The gilt centrepiece of an ostrich within a roundel taken from the previous armorial binding is pasted to the second unnumbered flyleaf. Vellum leaves (and unnumbered paper flyleaves), 333 x 230 mm. Written space c. 250 x 165 mm. 2 cols. 61-64 lines. Medieval column numeration to '194' (f. 49r). Collation: 1-2(12); 3(4) (ff. 25-28); 4-11(12); 12(12) wants 9-12, blank, after f. 136; 13(12); 14(12) wants 8-12. Ad hoc pencil signatures. Hand changes at f. 137r. Initials: (i) red and blue with ornament of both colours; (ii) 2-line, blue with red ornament; (iii) 1-line, blue or red. Secundo folio 'et simplex'.
