The letters in these two volumes are all manuscript copies taken from bundle 498 of the Laing Papers in the University Library at Edinburgh. The letters were copied in 1910. Vol. 1 (1175) contains letters 1-360 (23 Oct. 1721 - 19 Jan. 1789), and Vol. 2 (1176) contains letters 361-653 (28 Jan. 1789 - 18 Feb. 1847).
In Vol. 2, following the main series of letters, there are some manuscript copies taken from bundle 500 of the Laing Papers, being part of the correspondence of Robert Dundas, Lord Advocate (nos. 1-12). Following these there are some manuscript copies taken from bundle 509 of the Laing Papers (nos 1-7)
