Description (What the record is about)
-
Established in 1824, with its headquarters in Phoenix Park, Dublin, to carry out a survey of the island of Ireland in order to update land valuations for taxation purposes. It was made independent of the Ordnance Survey, Southampton, in April 1922, since when it has been the official mapping organisation of the Republic of Ireland, responsible for both the civilian and military mapping requirements of the country. The archive contains various map indexes and catalogues dating from the second half of the twentieth century, including the 1949 issue and its supplements, some technical papers (see also the Brian Warren Adams collection), photocopies of the 1836 prospectus and a correspondence file (1867-1872).
