Description (What the record is about)
-
This note is a list of telescopic equipment [made by Fontana, Torricelli and others] bought from Hobbes and listed here by Humphrey Poole, upper servant to the 3rd Earl of Devonshire. The heading reads: "note of the prospective glasses bought of Mr. Hobbes the 13th day of April. 1659 , and the line at the bottom reads: "Memorandum there are tubes only for the 4 last mentioned glasses". There is script only on one side of the four folios.
Hobbes was known to have bought a collection of telescopes from the Marquess of Newcastle in 1648 in Paris but these he sold in c.1661. The equipment mentioned here was bought by the 3rd Earl, which would explain why the note is in Humphrey Poole's hand.

- Humphrey Poole was a prolific note-taker in his role as Derbyshire receiver for the Cavendish estates. Some of his memoranda books survive in the Hardwick manuscripts (see HMS/2), and it is possible this note was extracted from elsewhere and placed here by a past keeper of the collections, because of the reference to Hobbes.
