Sherbrooke of Oxton

The documents are chiefly concerned with the title deeds of the Sherbrooke estate in Oxton, Nottinghamshire and the neighbouring parishes, including Arnold, Calverton, Farnsfield, Halam, Edingley, Epperstone, Lowdham, Gunthorpe, Southwell and Halloughton (DD/SK/1-133). The deeds also refer to parts of Derbyshire, Leicester, Lincolnshire, Middlesex and Yorkshire 1283-1887 (DD/SK/134-155). The collection contains papers on estate administration, c1550-1885, and manorial documents c1550-1874 (DD/SK/174-189). Of note is the Sherwood Forest Book, which details the pleas of the forest court chiefly held at Mansfield, and associated papers c1661-1934 (DD/SK/229/1-9/12). The collection contains papers, 1751-1834, belonging to and concerning Rev. Robert Lowe, Prebendary of Southwell and Rector of Bingham (DD/SK/214-215). There are also papers referring to a lawsuit concerning succession to the Oxton estate between Rev. Edward Walter Lowe and Henry Porter Sherbrooke, (formerly Lowe) 1790-1850 (DD/SK/208/1-37).

The Sherbrookes first held property in Oxton, Nottinghamshire in 1566. The marriage of William Sherbrooke to Anne Foxcroft in 1785 brought in considerable property in Hackney, Middlesex. Properties in Derbyshire and Leicestershire, (Brassington, etc.) and properties in Nottinghamshire (Basford, etc.) came into the Sherbrooke family through a Savile connection.. The estate was built up in the later 16th and 17th centuries. Further complications to the estate arose in the 18th century owing to failure of male heirs. The property is considerably complicated by the existence of the Prebendal Manors of Oxton, as a result of which a very high proportion of the Sherbrooke estate was originally copyhold land.

The collection is formed of several deposits which were made in 1955, 1956, 1969, 1972 and 1977.
