Dock and Harbour Engines (18 items).
Single-acting engine, with 36 inch cylinder, 8 foot stroke, parallel motion, [cast iron beam].
Reverse drawings, May 1825: Plan of the engine house and boilers, plan of the tunnel (coloured drawing showing 2 engines, longitudinal section of engine house and pump well, cross-sections of the engine house, longitudinal section of a boiler and cross-section of boiler house (partially coloured). These drawings bear letter codes.
Partially coloured reverse drawings made in London, Mar. 1828 and marked on the back "as executed": Plan of the engine and boiler houses showing 1 engine, longitudinal section of engine house, longitudinal section of boiler and cross-section of engine house, longitudinal section of engine house and cross-section of boiler house and boilers and foundations; front, side and back external views of the engine house - coloured reverse drawings and press copies, made in London 1 Apr. 1828.
36 inch pumps - working barrels, suction pipes etc. - reverse drawings; columns, entablature beams etc. - 4 small sheets of notes and sketches by William Creighton etc. stuck together; sheet of calculations docketed "Calculations of Pumps etc. for the St. Katherine's Docks, also of West India Docks, 23 Oct. 1826"; "Memorandum about West India Dock engine order etc." (by William Creighton - extracts from correspondence with John Rennie Jr. and John Walker about the suspension of the order, Nov. 1826).Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 797. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 150.
For the West India Dock Co. Pumping engine, Blackwall, London. The engine was ordered in 1825, but, as it was not urgently required, it was suspended due to pressure of work at Soho in Nov. 1826. It was finally completed in 1828.
