A Local Board for Cuckfield was formed in 1860 under the Local Government Act, 1858. In 1895 the Local Board became an Urban District Council under the terms of the Local Government Acts of 1894.
In 1934 the East Sussex Review Order abolished Cuckfield U.D.C. and Haywards Heath U.D.C. and amalgamated the two to form a new Urban District called Cuckfield Urban District. The District comprised of the three parishes of Cuckfield Urban, Haywards Heath and Linfield Urban.
The East Sussex Review Order also made some changes in Parish boundaries. Parts of Cuckfield Rural and Keymer in Cuckfield Rural District were added to Cuckfield Urban District and parts of Lindfield and a detached part of Cuckfield Rural were added to Haywards Heath Urban District immediately before it was amalgamated with Cuckfield U.D.C.
