Administrative / biographical background

The Amalgamated Engineering Union was founded in 1921, when the Amalgamated Society of Engineers merged with several smaller unions, although the merger appears to have had little impact locally. In January 1968, the AEU merged again to form the Amalgamated Union of Engineering and Foundry Workers (AEF), renamed the AUEW in January 1971.
