Administrative / biographical background

The Bognor Pier Company was formed in 1908 by A. Carter and M.W. Shanly, who were already established in catering and deck-chair businesses. The Company secretary was G.W. Cutts, a Bognor solicitor, whose firm deposited these records

Originally built as a private undertaking in 1865, the pier was acquired by the Bognor Local Board (later Bognor Urban District Council) in 1875. When, in 1908, it was found to need extensive repairs, the Council sold it to the Company, who undertook a major restoration, expanding the size of the buildings on the pier considerably

The Company managed the pier for about 40 years, a period which saw the pier requisitioned twice by the armed services in the two World Wars, and a further enlargement of the buildings in 1934-1936. In 1921, the Company also acquired the Picturedrome Cinema

In 1945 the pier was leased to H. Buxton of the Gaiety Theatre, Manchester and the Company ceased retail trading
