Description (What the record is about)
-
Some unclassified records, which appear not to fit in with any of the above series are also held at Taunton. These records are thought to have been gifted to the office, rather than as any official part of a Crown servant’s duties. It is known that many individuals who were involved with voyages of exploration, or on surveying duty, collected their own information that was not thought of as ‘official’. This explains why there is such a lot of information outside of the official repositories such as the UKHO and TNA. Places like the National Maritime Museum and the British Library, as well as many major overseas libraries, hold significant collections of material relevant to the history of the Surveying Service.
