Description (What the record is about)
-
During the sixteenth century and to some extent the seventeenth century observation of the Lenten fast and other fasts noted in the table of vigils, fasts and days of abstinence in the Book of Common Prayer was enforced. However, the Faculty Office issued various dispensations to eat meat and other prohibited food during these periods of public fasting. (See Muniment Books F I/Vv, A, B, B1, B2). An application for a dispensation was accompanied by a doctor's certificate specifying that fasting would be prejudicial to the health of the applicant.
