Description

This collection comprises the earlier papers deposited (originally in the William Salt Library) by the Antrobus family of Eaton Hall, Congleton, Cheshire. The later section of the papers is to be found under the accession number D(W)1909.

The papers cover the family's Cheshire estates centred principally on Eaton, Buglawton (the former Byron family property), Odd Rode (Kent Green), and Mobberley (Antrobus Hall estate), and the Staffordshire estates centred on Rushton James. Many of the estates were formerly the property of the Rode family of Eaton and Rushton James who had seats on each of those estates. Both estates were sold by Thomas Rode to George Lee in 1752. They were purchased by Edmund Antrobus from G. Ayton Lee around the turn of the nineteenth century.

Many of the pre 17th century papers were abstracted and "translated" by J.C. Wolley Dod of Edge Hall, Malpas, in 1948, and his very full abstracts of these early papers have been retained.

The original bundle numbers appear in parentheses below the present call number.
