This collection, deposited by Arthur John Dixon Robinson, Esq., and Col.G.N.Robinson is part of the muniments of the Braddylls of Portfield. They were contained in a box on which was a note signed by Dixon Robinson: "This box and its contents were in the possession of the late Adam Cottam at the time of his death and they were given to me by William Whalley, Mr. Cottam's Executor - it is not known how they came into Mr. Cottam's possession".
One Richard Cottam was steward of the Braddyll estates in the mid-18th Century.

The Portfield estate was acquired by John Braddyll, of nearby Brockhall, in 1580 and it remained with his descendants, along with the rest of their Whalley properties, until it was sold to James Whalley of Clerk Hill (see Greenwood of Clerk Hill p. 220).
The undermentioned documents are the only known surviving ones of this estate, having been preserved by a descendant of Richard Cottam, steward of the property in the mid-18th century.
