Administrative / biographical background

The unnamed lodge was established in 1784 and met at the Bayley's English Hotel, Ostend, Belgium. In a petition dated 15 November 1783 the proposed name of the lodge is given as 'The Imperial Lodge of Austrian Flanders', this name is also mentioned in a letter dated 1802 although it is unclear whether it was ever officially named. The lodge remains on the roll of the Antient Grand Lodge until 1813, when it was erased but a letter, dated 1810, suggests that the lodge suspended its meetings at the commencement of hostilities in 1803, when most of the members left Ostend.
