Outside Micklegate

This property just outside Micklegate Bar was acquired by the Hospital in 1488, the gift of William Grundall, rector of St Mary Bishophill Senior, York, along with a monetary gift of ten pounds of silver. By a deed dated St Luke's day 1488 (Cartulary, fos. 151v-152r, no. 315), William Cleveland, the master of Trinity Hospital, undertook for himself and his successors that the two Hospital chaplains should say daily two collects, one the collect for Trinity Sunday, the other the collect for All Saints' day, for the good state and prosperity of William while he lived and for his soul after death. Moreover, the master undertook that on the Monday of the first week of Lent each year 6s. 8d. should be distributed in accordance with William's wish and ordination, viz. 12d. to the master of the Hospital, 12d. to each of the chaplains, 4d. to the beadle of the Hospital, and 3s. 4d. to be distributed among the poor of the Hospital.
