Administrative / biographical background

The records held in Birmingham City Archives relate to the Warwickshire property. The estate at Sherborne was granted to Sir John Digby, a younger son of Sir George Digby of Coleshill, in 1617. At the death of John Digby, 3rd Earl of Bristol, in the early 18th century the property reverted to the main branch of the Coleshill family, William, 5th Lord Digby. Later the family seat moved permanently to Sherborne.
