James Stuart by Court-martial or Court of Enquiry for his conduct in connection with the deposal and arrest of Lord Pigot 13th Feb. to 12th March 1778; pp. 323-478, Correspondence; pp. 479-523, Printed copy of letters to and from and Proceedings of Council 22nd Sept. 1779 to 13th Feb. 1780; pp. 525-63, 565-610, Andrew Stuart to Directors 5th March 1781 and to Lord Amherst 3rd Jan. 1781, The case of his brother Gen. [Stuart's case was beautifully complicated. Firstly, he being a King's officer, it was difficult to arrange for a Court-martial or enquiry of any kind in India. Secondly, if the enquiry were transferred to England it would be difficult to arrange for the presence of the necessary witnesses. Thirdly, it was difficult to define the charges against him in a way which could make them cognizable by a military Court, and lastly, his offence in arresting Lord Pigot under the orders of the Majority in Council involved the question as to how far the authority of such a Majority extended.] (2) pp. 171-200, Admiral Hugh Pigot's request to the Directors 30th July 1778, to prosecute the Majority Members of the Madras Council who deposed and arrested Lord Pigot, with copies of the Attorney-General, Lord E. (5) pp. 257-69, Summary of Proceedings of the Court of Directors 18th March 1777 to 26th March 1779, Disputes in Madras Council.
