Extracts from a ts memoir (pages 37-84 & 149-158), written in 1965, relating to his service during the First World War with the London Territorial Field Artillery Brigade (alongside the author Dennis Wheatley) in France (from 1916) and in command of the 56th Trench Mortar Battery (280th Brigade) during the Battle of the Somme; and, after being invalided back to the United Kingdom, as a compass and navigation officer with the RFC at the Admiralty Compass Observatory at Slough (March 1917 - March 1918) and subsequently with the British War Mission to the United States of America under Brigadier General C F Lee, training American flying officers in air navigation and compass swinging and with the British 'flying circus' at Indianapolis (March 1918 - November 1918). The account also contains brief details of his experiences during the Second World War in the Chinnor Home Guard and in the firewatching team at Westminster Abbey.
