Bicknell Coney, a druggist in Leadenhall Street, a director of the Bank of England and secretary of the Corporation of the Sons of the Clergy, succeeded to the Sussex estate of his cousin John Coney of Burwash on the latter's death in 1775. Although only one of the maps is dated, it is presumed that both were commissioned in that year and indeed that the central, Burwash, portion of the estate was surveyed at the same time
Of the two farms depicted, Biggs Place, Ticehurst (AMS5990/1) was purchased by John Coney of Burwash butcher in 1673 and Poppinghole in Whatlington (AMS5990/2) by John Coney the younger of Burwash gent in 1707
