Administrative / biographical background

The deeds were found with the records of Mr F D Offer, formerly a solicitor in Westminster.

The National Freehold Land Society was the more common name of the National Permanent Mutual Benefit Society. It was founded in 1849 by, among others, Richard Cobden, Samuel Morley and John Bright. Its purpose was to enable men of small means to acquire freehold property, thereby gaining the vote.

The Society's property in New Malden (57 acres) was acquired in 1850 from John King, who was Mayor of Kingston in 1840. In 1835 he had bought for £3900 an estate of 93 acres in New Malden bounded on the west by what became Elm Road and on the east by the present Coombe Road. With the exception of one house, later the Railway Tavern, the land was totally undeveloped. When the National Freehold Land Society acquired their portion of the estate they built new roads, planted trees and divided it into allotments.
