The Oglanders landed interest in Sandown, anciently known as Sandham, began in 1503 with the purchase of a smallholding at South Sandham. But the main purchase was the manor or farm of North Sandham in 1559. There were also other large land owners in the area such as Winchester College, Knight family of Land-guard and later the Gothers and the Carters.
