Born in Salford, 1907 he joined the Manchester Regiment in 1924 to avoid being a burden on his relations. His father died in World War I and his mother was seriously mentally affected by the death of her young son, aged 5 who drowned in the dolly tub. Mr. Caldwell was a bandsman in the regiment and played the tuba. With the Regiment he went to Guernsey, India, Burma (he was in Burman during the Rebellion 1930 - 1932) and the Sudan.

He returned to Manchester at the end of 1932 and became a commissionaire with the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. He married in 1933. On the outbreak of World War II he joined the Air Force for 6 years and 3 months. In the 1940s he ran an off licence in Old Trafford and then went on to own 3 pubs in the area, before retiring.
