Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)
-
After the firm of Yarker and Postlethwaite had been dissolved in 1840 (John Postlethwaite having emigrated to Australia), RF Yarker continued in business in his own name until 1865; a letter dated 12 May 1865 notifies the change: 'Mr Salmon has become a partner with Mr Yarker from the 1st instant, and the Firm is Yarker and Salmon'.
Yarker died in 1870 and the firm was now simply that of AB Salmon. Several letters from him in 1873 ask for the Yarker and Salmon accounts to be settled: 'Miss Yarker is continually annoying me to get them completed' - and this may give a clue to why the correspondence has been returned by the Agents themselves.
