Title
YARKER AND SALMON AGENCY LETTERS 1858 - 1873
Description

These 25 bundles are compiled from letters sent by the firms of RF Yarker and Yarker and Salmon to their London Agents: Parker, Rooke and Parker of 17 Bedford Row, Middlesex between Michaelmas Term 1858 and Christmas Term 1869; and subsequently from AB Salmon to Parkers from Midsummer to Christmas 1873. Also included are additional letters to Parker, Rooke and Parker from other correspondents relating to the cases in hand.

Related material

The letters refer to many cases to be found elsewhere in the deposit. However the two most extensive matters dealt with relate to the Fell family of Daltongate and Flan How, Ulverston in letters from 1 October 1858 (also BD KF120-122); and to Wordsworth Harrison of The Lund, Ulverston, and The Stowe Iron Ore Company in letters from 17 May 1866 (also BD KF 132-133).

Administrative / biographical background

After the firm of Yarker and Postlethwaite had been dissolved in 1840 (John Postlethwaite having emigrated to Australia), RF Yarker continued in business in his own name until 1865; a letter dated 12 May 1865 notifies the change: 'Mr Salmon has become a partner with Mr Yarker from the 1st instant, and the Firm is Yarker and Salmon'.

Yarker died in 1870 and the firm was now simply that of AB Salmon. Several letters from him in 1873 ask for the Yarker and Salmon accounts to be settled: 'Miss Yarker is continually annoying me to get them completed' - and this may give a clue to why the correspondence has been returned by the Agents themselves.
