Physical description

15 Series

Immediate source of acquisition

The records were deposited by Messrs. Hyde Linaker and Son, estate agents, of 6 Church St., Frodsham, in July 1957. The firm had for many years been agents of the Aston Estate, to which most of the records listed within, nos.DLI/1 - 12, refer.

Custodial history

Acc. 207

Of the documents listed below, Nos. DLI/1-6 are original bundles and were found in a box labelled "Papers relating to the Aston family etc. 50." The remaining items have been grouped under convenient headings.

A brief note of the dispersal of the Aston Hall muniments will not be out of place. The older documents were purchased by the British Museum from the families of Aston and Talbot in 1903 and catalogued there as Add. MSS 36901-36927 and Add. Ch. 47380-53115. The records considered of insufficient importance remained in the possession of the estate agents, and those records relating to the Norris family of Speke, co. Lancs., were sold to Liverpool Public Libraries (see introduction to J.H. Lumby, Calendar of the Norris Deeds, Rec. Soc. of Lancs. and Ches., vol. 93). About 1949 the remaining documents were purchased from Mr. Hyde Linaker by Mr. Raymond Richards and are now (1962) in the Liverpool University Library.
