Description (What the record is about)
-
The 1396/7 inquisition ad quod damnum notes that one of the future Hospital properties in question was a messuage in Bootham worth 16s. a year, which is presumably the property described below. The executors of William de Tickhill granted the tenement to the hospital in 1396 for the support of the poor there, in return for masses and prayers (Cartulary fo. 83r-v, no. 165). In a brief list of certain Merchant Adventurers' charters made in the mid-19th century there were clearly seven other original documents then surviving for this property, dating between 1317 and 1396. These have not chanced to survive among the archives but copies of five of them (1317-1389) were transcribed into the Cartulary (fos. 133r-134v, nos. 270-274). The later leases describe the hospital property as the Black Bull or the Bull. It was sold by the Company in 1564.
