In 1848 plans for a new National School and teacher's residence were drawn up (BGP 42/1-3) and on 17 December 1849 Tilden Smith of Vinehall in Mountfield, esq conveyed a piece of land (18p) at Vinehall Street under the terms of the Schools Sites Act to the vicar and churchwardens of Mountfield and the rector and churchwardens of Whatlington for use as the site of the school. The school was built on the south side of the road at Vinehall (ROHAS P30/66); the deeds are either SAS/AN 126-132 or 146-160. On 1 October 1874 the trustees of the school exchanged the existing site and buildings with William Rushton Adamson for an new site at St John's Cross; a new school was constructed there at a cost of approximately £1,000 for 165 children (1878 trade directory). Considerable alterations and additions were made in 1882 (PAR 424/13/1). In 1920 a small piece of ground adjoining the school was presented by Raymond, Lord Ashton of Hyde, as a memorial to the men of the parish who were killed during the First World War; the land was used as a playground (1927 trade directory)
