Title
Philip Henry, 5th Earl Stanhope
Description

The papers of the 5th Earl not only form the largest single unit of the Stanhope archive but are also exceedingly complex. This is primarily so because of his literary and historical interests

Arrangement

The papers listed below fall broadly into four categories - personal papers; general correspondence; political papers; and literary papers. but In addition there are some records of a more distinctly official character [see O section of catalogue] and in addition Lord Stanhope accumulated a number of special collections either in the form of an independent archive, e.g. Granville or Pitt MSS., or as an artificial collection of autograph letters. After due consideration these last groups are listed in a section of the catalogue headed SPECIAL COLLECTIONS - U1590 / S1-6.
