Donor's grandfather, Joseph Bernard Calmus was born in Plodz (Plotzk) on 11/4/1888. He came to London at the age of 17 with his 2 elder brothers; one of these spoke English and was a schoolteacher. J.B. Calmus was a master tailor. He lived above his shop at 193, New Kent Road and had a factory round the corner in Old Kent Road. Many of the workers were relatives - brothers, brother-in-laws and cousins etc. but most were immigrants from "The Home" and locals from the area. In 1912, J.B. Calmus was living in Spital Square E1. He died 4/5/1919. The workshop photographs date from 1915 when electricity was installed.
