Second Lieutenant David Elland Langton - Machine Gun Corps
Born at Bramhill, Cheshire c 1897 son of David and Elizabeth, the family later lived at 51
Eccles Old Road, Pendleton, Manchester.
He was commissioned Temporary Second Lieutenant in The Prince of Wales's Own (West
Yorkshire Regiment) on the 16 November 1915, published in the London Gazette on 20 November
1915.
2Lt Langton was trained on the Vickers machine gun at the MG Training Centre, Belton Park
Camp, Grantham, Lincolnshire in early 1916. Whilst there he was transferred to the Machine Gun
Corps, with effect from the 27 March 1916, confirmed in the London Gazette a little later.
The book in which he recorded his course notes include headings - General Description of
Vickers .303 Light Automatic MG, Mechanism, Aiming, Training of a Machine Gunner, Tactical
Employment, Visual Training, Stoppages, Characteristics of Machine Gun, Fire Orders, Range Work,
Fire Direction, Night Firing, Indirect Overhead Fire, Machine Gun Field Works, Use of Gun Positions -
Ground & Cover, Open Warfare, Reconnaissance for the Attack, Machine Gun in the Defence,
Machine Gun Field Works - Working Parties, Riding - Characteristics of Mule as compared to Horse,
Principle of Employment of a Machine Gun in Trench Warfare, and Duties of guns in reserve. On
page 28, by - Indication and Recognition he wrote "31/3/16".
Having completed training, and taken disembarkation leave, David was sent overseas. The
normal procedure was to be sent, first to the MG Base Depot at Camiers on the French coast north
of the Infantry Base Depot, Etaples, from there sent forward as a reinforcement; he joined 36th
Brigade Machine Gun Company. Later 37 Coy.;Other Notes: LANGTON, Second Lieutenant, DAVID ELLAND, 36th Coy. Machine Gun Corps. Died of wounds 10th April 1917. Age 20. Son of David Herbert and Elizabeth Langton, of 51, Eccles Old Rd., Pendleton, Manchester. Native of Bramhall, Cheshire. III. A. 13. Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun - Pas De Calais, France.;
