The Circuit began as Manchester 5th Wesleyan (Oxford Road) Circuit, formed out of Manchester 3rd Wesleyan (Grosvenor Street) Circuit in 1846. Churches belonging to the circuit were: Albert Park Wesleyan, Chorlton-cum-Hardy Beech Road Wesleyan, Chorlton-upon-Medlock Oxford Road Wesleyan and Lower Chatham Street Wesleyan Mission, Hulme George Street Wesleyan and Radnor Street Wesleyan, Ladybarn Wesleyan in Fallowfield, Moss Side Wesleyan, Northenden Wesleyan, Rusholme Wesleyan and Withington Wesleyan. Chapels in Hulme and Chorlton-cum-Hardy left in 1867 to form Manchester (Radnor Street) Wesleyan Circuit. In August 1925, Oxford Road Wesleyan left the Circuit to join Manchester and Salford Mission as Oxford Hall. The Circuit was subsequently re-named Manchester (Withington) Methodist Circuit in March 1940. In 1949 Oxford Road ex-UMFC and Ancoats Beswick Street ex-UMFC joined from Manchester (Oxford Road) ex-United Methodist Circuit. In 1951 East Didsbury Methodist Church was transferred from Stockport (Tiviot Dale) Methodist Circuit followed by Didsbury ex-Primitive Methodist and Didsbury St Paul's ex-Wesleyan in 1964 and the circuit was renamed Withington and Didsbury Methodist Circuit. Manley Park ex-Wesleyan and Chorlton-cum-Hardy Manchester Road ex-Wesleyan from the former Manchester (Chorlton and Moss Side) Circuit were added in 1970, together with churches from Manchester (South East) Circuit, namely Barlow Moor Methodist, Levenshulme ex-Wesleyan and Longsight Northmoor Road ex-Wesleyan. The Circuit then reverted to its former name, Withington Methodist Circuit.
