Description

Bound tss memoirs (212 pp plus illustrations), written in 1971-72, covering her childhood part of which was spent in India (1907-9 and 1912-14) where her father was Chief Engineer of the North Western Railway; life on the Home Front during the First World War including her wedding; her experiences as the wife of an Army officer between the wars including on the North West Frontier (1919-20) in Gibraltar (1928-31) and at Shoeburyness (1932-35); and life on the Home Front during the Second World War, in Chester (1939-44) and Croydon (1944-45), with references to the effects of rationing, the problems of the elderly in wartime, evacuation and the flying bomb menace. The memoirs include a few extracts from letters written by her husband in December 1914 when he was serving in the Royal Garrison Artillery in France, containing excellent descriptions of conditions at the front and references to the Christmas Truce; and also an extract from a letter describing the scene outside Buckingham Palace on Armistice Day 1918.
