Administrative / biographical background

Sheffield School of Design (from 1855 called the School of Art) was established in 1843. Much of its archive was destroyed in the bombing of the College in 1940. The College's administrative centre in the immediate post-blitz period moved to the pub next door, to which 2,000 of the books in the library were salvaged. In 1969 the College of Arts was merged with the College of Commerce and Technology to form Sheffield Polytechnic.
