Description

Memorandums from Mr McLean, Port Sunlight to Mr L.V.Fildes, Lever House, discussing Miss Bridget Mary Brennan. In 1924 Miss Brennan was retired after twenty five years of service due to ill health. She received a pension from the Employees' Benefit Fund and received a dividend on her Preferential Certificate. On 18th September 1926, Miss Brennan married Mr William Alfred Balfour Preston. In accordance with the Benefit Fund regulations, her pension and Preferential Certificate were cancelled following her marriage which she is querying. The discussion follows that the pension was cancelled under clause 28 of the Employees' Benefit Fund, although no direct guidance is given in the case of a spinster, in receipt of a pension, marrying. This is the first case of its kind. The Co-Partnership Trust Deed also makes no provision for a case like this, however, the discussion compares this case to that of a widow who re-marries, therefore, it was decided that the Preferential Certificate should not be cancelled. Mr Fildes acknowledges that these circumstances may have to be considered by the Trustees in the future. In the follow-up memorandum, Mr McLean confirmed that there are a number of other spinsters on the Preferential List where the same circumstances regarding Preferential Certificates will apply for Lever Brothers and R.S. Hudson's employees. Mr Fildes requests of a list of the employees and suggests a solution similar to the late employees of the Millbay Company i.e. a cash payment in lieu of a Certificate should be made. 29 September 1926, 1 October 1926, 5 October 1926 and 6 October 1926 [For related correspondence see catalogue entry GB1752.LBC/136/93]
