45 horse power crank engine. Engine countermanded and never erected.Reverse plan of the engine and boiler houses, longitudinal section of the engine house with eccentric working gear pencilled in, sections of the engine house and boilers. All the drawings bear letter codes.
For Scarth Marshall & Co. Cotton [?] mill, Manchester. The engine was ordered in Apr. 1803, and an entry was opened in Engine Order Book No. 5. The firm countermanded it in Dec. of the same year. Boulton Watt & Co. pointed out to Scarth Marshall & Co. on 22 Dec. 1803 that they had prepared a lot of the materials for the engine specially to Scarth Marshall & Co.'s specification and in great haste, and therefore they were bound to incur a loss as the parts could not easily be reused [see Business Letter Book Sep. 1803-Aug. 1804].

80 horse power double-acting independent crank engine, with 44 inch cylinder, 7 foot stroke, parallel motion, cast iron beam, cast iron connecting rod.
Also rolling mill machinery.Plan of the driving machinery, plan of the engine, boilers and driving machinery showing space for second engine, elevation of engine and connection to rolling mill - coloured reverse drawings dated Jun. 1842 and marked "Not adopted"; spur fly wheel (reverse drawing marked "the same wheel also used for Chatham Rolling Mill 1844"), double-acting pump and air vessel, plan and sections of boiler, columns - partially coloured original and partially coloured reverse drawings.
Reverse plan of the engine and boiler, plan of the tunnel, longitudinal section of the engine and transverse section of the boiler, transverse sections of the engine, sections of the boiler, circa Mar. 1843; spring beams, shaft plummer block and headstock plate, air pump and condenser, spur pinion (original only), air vessel for the 15½ inch double pump, wall box for outer end plummer block, wheels and shafts for driving the small rolls and lathes, steam and feed pipes and boiler sections, packing stage and stairs and balcony and railing round entablature etc., 24 ft. fly wheel, cold water pump etc., wheels and shafts etc. as made by W. Clift, shafts and wheels etc. and lathe gearing (original only), governor gearing etc. (with draft sketch), rolls and pinions as made by W. Clift, wheels and shafts for driving gear (original only), gearing for working shears - original and reverse drawings, several of which are coloured. All the above drawings bear letter codes.
Also the following letters, preliminary sketches etc.: transcript of letter from R. Taplin, not dated [circa Aug. 1842?]; transcript of letter from R. Taplin dated Portsmouth Yard, 12 Oct. 1842; transcript of extract of letter from ? [James Brown?] dated London, 15 Oct. 1842; 2 sheets of tracings of plans and sections of copper and iron rolling machinery, location of existing engine etc., marked "Portsmouth new 70 horse"; 2 sketches of proposed arrangement of engine, 19 Aug. 1842; plan of the engine, steam pipes etc. on tracing paper marked "received with Mr. Taplin's letter of 3 Aug. 1843"; elevations showing the framing, entablature, stairs, railings etc. - unmarked and undated; plan of the boiler.
Also the following uncoded drawings etc. of rolling mill machinery: list of items required for working the lathe, shafting, rolls etc., with draft; press copy plans of the connecting machinery marked "given to Mr. Clift 20 Jul. 1842"; "Plan showing an arrangement for improving the Rolling Operation at the Metal Mills", traced from a drawing sent by James Brown, 1 Nov. 1842; "Plan showing an arrangement for improving the Rolling Operation at the Metal Mills" - different views to the previous drawing; press copy sketch of small rolls, shafts and clutches to be made by W. Clift, 30 Aug. 1843 (this is mounted on part of an elevation of the engine marked "not adopted"; transcript of extract of letter from R. Taplin dated Portsmouth, 10 Jan. 1844, re the shears.
