Description (What the record is about)
-
A copy of this photograph is published in R.B. Graham's Photographic illustrations, with descriptions of Mandalay & Upper Burmah, Expeditionary Force, 1886-87, Birmingham ?1887. However this photograph predates Graham's arrival in Mandalay, King Thibaw having surrendered in November 1885, and so he cannot be the photographer. A more likely source is described by W.W. Hooper in his Burmah: A series of one hundred photographs, illustrating incidents connected with the British Expeditionary Force to that country...London and Calcutta, 1887. In it he publishes a very similar portrait to this one from 'a negative found in the Palace...It appears that Theebaw kept a Court Photographer, a Frenchman, and a staff of Burmese assistants'. The Frenchman remains unidentified. Photographers = Unknown ( possibly Miss Calogreedy, maid of Honour to the Queen);.
