Description (What the record is about)
-
The documents listed under this head arrived at the Birmingham Assay Office in three boxes, each labelled as follows:
This box contains the papers & Books which were in the possession of Mr. Chubb. They were given into the custody of E. Price, September 23 1863, by E. Chubb on his leaving Soho Foundry.
It is not clear that all the documents fall under the title adopted above, as only a portion of them have as yet been examined.
Unfortunately, while the papers were in the custody of the Assay Office, the contents of these boxes were disturbed, the various files of letters and vouchers were untied and the contents left to spill out and become intermingled; it has therefore been extremely difficult to discern any traces of their original arrangement.
The Letters are now arranged in one simple sequence of annual files, though it is evident they were once divided under a number of heads, since a few of the original wrappers and labels survive.
The Copies have likewise been arranged in annual files. A number of these copy-letters are patently incomplete, and there is a large residue of unidentified and unlisted sheets.
The remaining unlisted material is in three boxes.
