Description

Annual returns giving names, professions and residence of members of the Lodge of Virtue [Moderns] and general correspondence relating to the running of the lodge. Years 1789, 1790, 1792, 1793 and 1808 are not extant.

Administrative / biographical background

The Lodge of Virtue, No. 311 was granted its warrant on the 6 June 1769 and met at a variety of Bath taverns throughout its existence. These were as follows. Saddlers' Arms, Stall Street from 1769, Queen's Head Tavern, Cheap Street from 1775, York House, York Buildings from 1783, White Lion, Market Place from 1788, Bird Cage Tavern [unknown] from 1799, Gloucester Inn, Southgate Street from 1801, Argyle Coffee House, Argyle Street from 1806, Castle Inn, Northgate Street from 1809 and finally, Freemasons' Hall, York Street from 1819. The Master of the Lodge in 1782 was Henry Youngclass and the lodge was erased in 1831.
