Gallantry Notes: 3 Bn Magazine (No 6) for account of gallantry at Flesquieres 28/8/1918…"2/Lt JF Williams showed great courage when advancing with his section.During their advance to the first bound, Billen Chapel Avenue, a low-flying enemy aeroplane dropped a bomb which exploded on the parapet and tore 2/Lt williams's respirator to shreds, also wounding him in the abdomen. At the same time it blew over both Sergts and wounded Sgt J McTurk MM, in the hand. Sergt McTurk at once took command, arranged for his wounded officer to be taken away, and although much shaken by the bombing experience, he ably led his command forward. His able leadership was suddenly brought to an end by the effects of six gas shells which burst around him.";
