Description (What the record is about)
-
Joseph Barber to [Richd. How] The sights & virtues of Tonbridge Wells & surrounding district. - Reasons for not marrying "Gracey": too extravagant, too genteel, etc. "The grocery business is what thee knowst, I am much unacquainted with tho' were I ever so well it has been long promised to I. Markes ? whenever my father leaves off, & the-linen part of our drapery consists in cutting out pinners. quoifs etc. for the pedlars, as also sale shifts & pudding bags in abundancey which are arts I fear my pretty friend would not only be awkward in acquiring but also very unwilling to learn. More important, it seems that Gracey's parents were not willing to pay a high enough price to Barber for their daughter's marriage. My old affliction in the head continues worse."
