In the late 1930s Routledge & Kegan Paul (RKP) began to commission a series of monographs concerning English Master Painters. Work began almost immediately on two volumes: Bonington (by Shirley) and Reynolds (by Waterhouse). Waterhouse's aim, as he states in the preface of the text, was to produce a book' which would 'illustrate the bulk of Sir Joshua's major work in portraiture from the beginning of his career to the end'. He found the selection of illustrations taxing as 'one could double their number with very little difficulty'. The book was completed in 1941, and published as: Waterhouse, Ellis (1941). Reynolds London: Kegan Paul, Trench Trubner & Co. (English master painters). [A copy is available in the Paul Mellon Centre's Library]
