Title
Correspondence concerning permission to build a house at Warbleton
Date
1610
Description

These three copies illustrate the means by which Thomas Blatcher of Warbleton, a shingler, attempted to obtain permission to erect a cottage between Greenslade and Collards Green in Warbleton. The land, roadside waste, was considered part of the Rape of Hastings, and the letters provide an instructive view of the mechanics of an application to the lord of the Rape, Thomas Pelham, and his officers

A fourth copy, relating to an application for a site in an un-named parish, perhaps near (but not in) Brede, is also included (AMS6573/4)

The documents are part of the Pelham archive at the British Library, and their BL references appear after each entry. One volume, BL Add MS 33058, consists entirely of petitions, 1581-1610 and undated, and a list of its contents appears as AMS6573/5
