The Road Safety Sub-Committee was appointed in September 1973, and comprised of seven members from the Council, along with representatives from the Automobile Association (AA), Royal Automobile Association (RAC), Road Transport Industry, Cyclists Touring Club, Pedestrians Association and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Its main function was to consider matters of public safety, including local campaigns and publicity, the introduction of ?pelican? crossings, and training and testing.
