Description (What the record is about)
-
Etchingham, originally a chapelry of Salehurst, had achieved parochial status by the 14th century; it acquired burial-rights in 1357 and land for a burial-ground was granted in 1362. The present church was built by Sir William de Etchingham in the 1360s. For a detailed discussion of the church, the role of Sir William in its building and a description of the elaborate scheme of heraldic glass which adorned it until the end of the 18th century, see Nigel Saul, 'Scenes from provincial life' (Oxford, 1986) 140-160.
The church of Holy Trinity was built at Hurst Green, on the border of Etchingham and Salehurst, in 1884 at a cost of £2000. It was served by the rector of Etchingham until 1907, when it was created a separate parish.
Many of the records listed here were created or arranged by Col Thomas Bartleet Hornblower of The Croft, Etchingham, who served as churchwarden and was responsible for many of the church restoration schemes until his departure for Bexhill in 1951. Most notably Hornblower masterminded the underpinning of the building in 1937-1938, raising funds for the work by an active press campaign. He presented many of his papers to the new rector in August 1957, suggesting their eventual donation to the Sussex Archaeological Society. He retained his papers and photographs in connection with the campaign of 1937-1938, and gave those directly to the Society the following October; they are listed as ACC 3375. For a photograph of Hornblower, see PAR323/10/1/3; for an account of his arrival in Etchingham and work on the church, see PAR323/7/4/6.
