Description (What the record is about)
-
The documents listed in this calendar form the archives of the Wynell-Mayow family which has been seated at Bray in Morval parish since the sixteenth century. The main family property consisted of manors of Bray and Trenode in Morval with smaller properties in East Looe, Polruan (in Lanteglos by Fowey) and elsewhere. Good series of deeds remain for this, although a certain amount has evidently been lost e.g. the early deeds of Trenode. There are also groups of deeds relating to land in Fowey (Nos 335-347) and Lostwithiel (348-157) whose connection with property held by the family is not obvious. A small group of papers relating to the Doughty family of Hanworth in Norfolk has been placed at the end of the calendar, since they relate to a period long before this family was connected with the Mayows.
A brief pedigree of the Mayow family is available at CRO. It corrects in several points that given in Vivian's Visitations of Cornwall at page 315. It has not however been possible to carry the pedigree any further back with certainty, in spite of the names of earlier members of the family appearing in e.g. Nos 339, 343.
Deeds and similar documents have been fully calendared. Seals have only been noted on documents before 1500 in date, unless of special interest. The abbreviation conv. indicates a seal of conventional non-armorial design. Endorsements have only been given if they convey information not elsewhere in the deed.
