Description

This line diverges south from the main London to Brighton line at Patcham, continuing southward by a tunnel to the seafront, and then extending along it in both directions.

Railway no 1 diverges from the LBSC line at Patcham, and follows close to the line of the existing railway to Brighton Station. From Elder Street it passes in a tunnel under several streets (with houses scheduled) to emerge on the seafront at West Street/Russell Street. Parishes: Patcham, Preston, Brighton. Names Tivoli Gardens, and several streets.

Railway no 2 extends in a tunnel westwards along the seafront from railway no 1 at Great Russell Street. It emerges above ground at Cliftonville, and terminates at Wish Wharf, Aldrington Basin. Parishes: Brighton, Hove, Aldrington. Names several streets, also Grand Hotel, Bedford Hotel, coal duty house, Royal Brunswick Cricket Ground, boat builder's yard, toll house (on road), Hartlepool Coal Depot.

Railway no 3 continues railway no 2 from Wish Wharf along the seafront to link with the LBSC Railway at Southwick. Parishes: Aldrington, Portslade, Southwick. Names Drove Cottage, Halfway House, Copperas Gap, Steam flour mills, Rock Houses.

Railway no 4 extends eastwards along the seafront, much of it in tunnels, from railway no 1 at West Street, terminating near the Gasworks at Rottingdean (Kemp Town). Parishes: Brighton, Ovingdean. Names several streets, and Royal Albion Hotel. Gasworks.

There is a section with scale as above. Cross-sections are included with horizontal scale 4": 20 chains and vertical scale 2.5": 100 feet. An OS map shows intended routes marked in red.
