This congregation first met in 1873 in Barrow Town Hall. A new school Church opened in Ainslie Street in 1876. Emmanuel Church, on an adjacent site in Abbey Road, opened in 1900. It became part of the United Reformed Church in 1972. Faced with heavy repair bills, Emmanuel United Reformed Church closed in 1991, with the congregation moving to Abbey Methodist Church (Trinity Church Centre).
