In May 1905 a temporary school for infants and seniors was opened on Loder Road. A new purpose-built school with senior mixed and junior mixed departments was opened on Balfour Road on 27 February 1924. In September 1939 the school was requisitioned by the government and became a military hospital. School sessions were held at Ditchling Road Senior School. Some children were evacuated to Yorkshire. In July 1970 Balfour Junior Mixed Infants' School became Balfour Junior School when 220 children were transferred to the newly built infants' school. The school became Balfour Middle School in September 1972 and reverted to Balfour Junior School in September 1985
